TENDER OFFERINGS
Tender Offerings is inspired by Robin Wall Kimmerer's reflections on reciprocal restoration, “the mutually reinforcing restoration of land & culture such that repair of ecosystem services contributes to cultural revitalization, and renewal of culture promotes restoration of ecological integrity.” Exploring this concept through connection to place the creative process and the relationship between the natural environment, culture, and well-being Tender Offerings is a fresh take on place-based stewardship.
VISUAL ART EXHIBIT
Tender Offerings celebrates the gifts of our place, Two Harbors. Created using second hand and found materials, each piece is a glimpse into the feelings that arise when I consider the unique gifts of our rural community. From the magnificent Lake Superior to the magical wildflowers that dot the roadside in Summer, I draw inspiration from my lived experience of our unique place to build this collection.
COMMUNITY GATHERING
On November 7, 2023, Kayla hosted a community gathering along with a team of local artists inviting the community to contribute their own Tender Offerings to the art exhibit and future zine. Activities included decorating name tags celebrating our favorite seasons in Two Harbors, writing poetry evoking the emotions and sensations felt immersed in the natural environments of our rural community, an artist talk, and creating pieces inspired by our memories of places in our community.
A ZINE
A zine is a self-published, non-commercial publication typically created by individuals or small groups covering various subjects with a DIY aesthetic. It provides a platform for creative expression, marginalized voices, and niche interests outside mainstream media. Guided by the artistic direction of Kayla, the team behind the Tender Offerings community gathering will draw inspiration from the community gathering to further explore the themes of the work building and distributing a free quarterly zine together that uplifts local voices, addressing environmental concerns currently facing Two Harbors. By celebrating the gifts of our place through the eyes of the community, Tender Offerings fosters increased community engagement, inspires fresh perspectives on relationships between the natural environment, culture, and well-being, and activates place-based stewardship.
